Arjun Samantray (Director)

Arjun Samantray’s journey from the quiet lanes of Jatni, a small town in Odisha’s Khurda district, to becoming a nationally recognized filmmaker is a story of resilience, cultural pride, and creative passion. His early life was shaped not by privilege but by exposure to raw, grassroots storytelling. With no access to multiplexes or formal film training, Arjun's first encounters with cinema were in ₹1 tent screenings during local fairs—an experience that planted the seeds of his love for visual storytelling.

About

Before entering filmmaking, Arjun Samantray found his artistic voice on stage. His solo drama “Ichha,” which he wrote, directed, and performed, toured over 90 schools across India—entirely funded by voluntary student donations. This experience shaped his deep understanding of emotion, audience connection, and honest storytelling.  Carrying that independent spirit into cinema, Arjun debuted with the short film Mo Nadira Samudra, a dialogue-free emotional piece that garnered praise at multiple film festivals. He continued with impactful works like Khidkiyaan (awarded Best Director and Technical Excellence by PSBT), Prahalada Natak, and They Worship Me—each reflecting Odisha’s cultural depth and social complexity. Known for his holistic creative control, Arjun often handles writing, direction, cinematography, and editing himself, giving his films a cohesive and deeply personal voice. His work is marked by authenticity, cultural insight, and artistic integrity.

Beyond filmmaking, Arjun Samantray is a dedicated numismatist and philatelist, using his platform The CoinWorld to educate youth on the history behind coins and stamps. He plans to establish a currency museum, blending his passion for heritage with education. Though early in his career, Arjun is already building a legacy—as a cultural archivist, independent filmmaker, and role model for aspiring creatives from small towns. His work bridges tradition and modernity, art and activism, capturing stories that reflect Odisha’s soul. Through cinema and cultural preservation, he revives forgotten narratives and inspires others to believe in the power of authentic storytelling. Arjun is not just creating films—he’s building a movement rooted in truth, creativity, and cultural pride. With each project, he proves that powerful stories can rise from modest beginnings and resonate far beyond their origin.
